Click of death

When I startup my PowerBook today, I heard a clicking sound coming from the attached external backup drive. By the time OS X booted, the Finder won't work until I pulled out the Firewire cable, then everything is fine again. Now the external won't mount, and I can't get Disk Utility or DiskWarrior to read it. It's happened to me before with another drive, and there's nothing I can do to salvage it. I know bad things can happen to hard drives, but in this case, it's a just under a year drive that's never moved or dropped. The irony is the backup drive is connected to a running 2-1/2-year PowerBook that's worked much harder. I'm taking the drive into service tomorrow, but chances are slim that they can save it or any of the data that's in it. I'm sure the company will be happy to replace it with a new drive, but we all know that's not what we're after, don't we? I just want my data back, please.
