Another mindless .Mac renewal

My .Mac family membership has 8 days left so I went to my local Apple shop, bought a retail box and saved HK$200 (US$25.67). I came home, logged on to http://www.mac.com/activate and filled in the activation number in the box. It went through several more screens before the renewal process was complete.

Do I think the membership fee is worth what I'm getting out of .Mac? Absolutely not. In fact, the value of .Mac gets less and less enticing each year, especially when comparing to other free services that offer more and more. Gmail is offering 2.7+GB e-mail accounts; Xdrive has 5GB of free space; then there are the countless free web 2.0 services vying for your attention.

I'm keeping my membership because .Mac is my main e-mail address from the start. Also, I'm a shareholder who wants Apple to make money. But it needs to seriously start catching up quickly and offer much more if it wants Mac users to continue paying the annual premium.
